Craftsmanship Grammar: Bringing Craftsmanship Roots to Life

RAW will share a lecture diving into the evolution of RAW Architecture’s design. Building on the Underdog Philosophy lecture, which tackled Indonesia’s challenges like unaffordable housing and cultural gaps while celebrating its tropical resilience and craftsmanship, RAW will explore how the underdog spirit has grown into a revolution of craft.

RAW's Principal, Realrich Sjarief will share about the concept of Grammar as seeing design as a whole—from the tiniest details to the big picture, micro to macro, and back again. Realrich Sjarief will share three key perspectives:

Methodology Grammar: How RAW researches and lays a strong design foundation.

Tectonic Grammar: The language of buildings, where structure and form vibe together.

Craftsmanship Grammar: The final touch, where skilled hands turn details into living projects.

From raw concrete to bamboo, bricks, and woven steel, RAW uses low-cost materials with a high-quality process, like CRISPR in genetic design: precise, natural, and transformative, without forcing the material’s essence. RAW focuses on detail-oriented work, moving from small-scale to large, creating solutions for communities in Jakarta’s urban hustle, Yogyakarta’s cultural core, vernacular regions, and the visionary Nusantara. The presentation will share community house, library building, and private residence to dream a model of public project later on. These collaborations linked RAW with its community, clients, and engineering from low to high technology.
