Abstract
Cities are at the forefront of global energy consumption, accounting for over 70% of carbon emissions and housing more than 50% of the world's population. Since the industrial revolution, urban environments have shaped energy use patterns, and with urban populations expected to double by 2050, the built-up area is projected to more than triple. As such, cities are uniquely positioned to both drive and mitigate climate change. This talk will explore novel approaches in city science, urban building energy modeling and carbon reduction strategies, focusing on harnessing hybrid physics-based simulations and AI to make cities more sustainable and equitable for everyone.
Bio
Yuqian Ang (Dr.) is a Presidential Fellow / Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore. His diverse career spans academia, government, and entrepreneurship. He holds a PhD in Architecture (Building Technology) from MIT and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Gates Scholar. His research focuses on physics-based simulation methods and AI/machine learning for sustainable cities. Currently, he leads a team of over ten researchers in the City Syntax Lab, working on energy efficiency, thermal comfort, equity, and urban sustainability, with his tools already being used in cities to reduce carbon emissions. Yuqian's work has been published in journals including Nature Communications, Sustainable Cities and Society, and Applied Energy. Prior to his academic career, he served as Senior Assistant Director at Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry, contributing to the development of Singapore's $19 billion national research masterplan. He has also consulted for the World Bank on urban data science workstreams. As an innovator, Yuqian has co-founded two startups and is spinning off a third.
